How to Make a Game

Sound

Sound in video games can be deceptivly difficult to recreate. There are so many things that can happen depending on an enviorment. It is usually best to find those enviorments in the real world and recreate them so that it fits the enviorment the video game is taking place.

Let's say your video game is taking place in the woods. What type of sounds would you expect to hear? What time of day is it? Is it raining? Where are you located? All these factors can change to atmosphere of your world with sounds. I would expect birds chirping, tree leaves moving, howling from wolves during the night, rain drops if it's raining, or animals specifically where your game is taking place in.

Here are some sounds you would expect to hear

Cabin in the Woods City Streets Ocean Shore Mountain Wilderness
Steps on Wooden Floors Cars Honking Waves Crashing Birds Chirping
Clock Ticking Street Performers Playing Music Seagulls Calling Wind Whistling Through Trees
House Creeking People Chattering Wind Gusts Rivers Flowing
Wind Hitting the House Police Sirens in the Distance Footsteps on the Sand Leaves Rustling in the Breeze

Getting these sounds can be tricky. The biggest game companies will shoot for realism and record these sounds to get close to the real thing as much as possible. This is unlikely for more indie developers. Recreation is also another effective way of getting these sounds but people will most likely opt for the many free sound effect websites online. Copyright is still important for game development and should not be stolen from other games or random youtube videos with that specific sound.
